Overlay Silver Paste


Characteristics of Overlay Silver Paste


  • This is specifically formulated to bond to non-porous or glazed surfaces such as porcelain. Its viscosity can be adjusted by water which increases the way of expression.
  • It turns into 99% silver form after firing.
  • The surface of the fired area where Overlay Silver Paste was applied will be white and matte due to crystallization of silver, but a luster can be obtained by polishing. (Stainless blush, burnisher, sandpaper, file)

Paste Type

  • Available in 15g bottle .
  • Some silver settling may  occur at bottom of jar. Stir the paste well with a brush or spatula before use.
  • This product is water based and can dry up.  Always keep the container tightly capped.
  • If the paste dried up, add a little water to recover its original state.
  • To dilute the paste, take out the necessary amount and place it in a different container. Then, add necessary amount of water.
  • Do not dilute it directly in the bottle.


Drying


The applied paste must be completely dried before firing. It may be dried in the following ways.

  • Hair dryer: At least 10 minutes with a 1200w hair dryer. Place the dryer within 15cm/6 inches from the piece.
  • Food Dehydrator : At least 10 minutes at 60℃/140F
  • Kiln: At least 10 minutes at 150℃/302F

*Do not apply the heat over 250℃/482F, otherwise  the binder burns away and the Overlay Silver Paste shape of the layer may change.



Firing

  • You must fire the piece with a electric kiln, which is equipped with a temperature control.
  • Ramp the kiln to the applicable temperature depending on type of your project.
  • Ventilate your workroom well.

*Ramping time varies by type and size of the kiln. Please refer to your kiln manual.



Option 1:
Firing Overlay Silver Paste applied porcelain piece

(1) Place the piece in a cold or warm kiln (below 200℃/390°F). Ramp the kiln to the applicable temperature below. Take at least 15 minutes to reach the firing temperature.

(2) After reaching the selected temperature, turn off the kiln and cool down to 100℃/210°F

Option 2:
Firing Overlay Silver Paste applied porcelain piece with combination of Art Clay Silver Type.


(1) Place the piece in a cold or warm kiln (below 200℃/390°F). Ramp the kiln to the applicable temperature below. Take at least 15 minutes to reach the firing temperature.

(2) After reaching the selected temperature with appropriate holding time below, turn off the kiln and cool down to 100℃/210°F. Then, take out the piece.

※Be careful that quickly cooling the piece, such as quenching may cause it to break or crack.

  • Do not apply unreasonable pressure to the fired pieces.
  • Keep the clay indoors out of direct sunlight and do not keep in a refrigerator.
  • Use as soon as possible after opening.
  • It may cause a crack during firing if the clay is not dried enough.
  • Be careful of hot clay, as burns may result.
  • Keep this product out of the reach of children.
  • If you get any of this product in your eyes or mouth, flush immediately with plenty of water and call your physician.
  • Avoid contact with your skin. If skin irritation or itching occurs, wash with water and consult your doctor immediately.
  • Do not place a ceramic or porcelain piece that has the Overlay Silver Paste applied into a microwave oven.
